THE apprentices continued their compelling form in the saddle at Caymanas Park yesterday. Riding with assurance, they produced another three winners on the 12-race card to add to the three they produced on debut.

Orayne Sewell and and Orlando Foster, who were winless on the opening day, opened their account with a win, while first-day winner Renardo McNaughton rode another yesterday to be the first of his batch with two wins.

With winning rides at a premium, only champion jockey Dick Cardenas managed two successes and ‘pretender’ to his title, Dane Nelson, could only muster one.

Champion and leading trainer Wayne DaCosta, who won the only two-year-old race on the programme, led the trainers haul with three wins.

The trophy races for the Donald Tankoy Memorial Cup in two divisions went to Stepping Razor, ridden by Everton Miller in the first, and Slam Eagle, piloted by Rayan Wilson in the second, while Sweet Trail won the Overnight Allowance penultimate event in the absence of the morning line favourite The Guv, who was declared a late non-starter.

Ridden by Winston Griffith, Sweet Trail was installed the 3-4 favourite and shooting from barrier 11 ran 1,200m in a time of 1:13.3 behind fractions of 23.4 and 48.1.

Trained by Patrick Chang for owners Arscott farms, Sweet Trail was winning for the third time this season from six starts.

Sir South, ridden by Aaron Chatrie at odds of 4-1, was three-parts of a length second, New Kingston, a 15-1 betting option ridden by Andre Martin, finished another three lengths back, with Palace Guard, well supported at odds of 2-1, completed the frame under Conrod Ellis in the field of 10.

Sweet Trail, a four-year-old chestnut filly by Tracking out of Brown Sugar (Footloose II) and bred Melvin Lawes, was winning for the sixth time and earned $390,400 for earnings of $ 3,515,900 lifetime.
