CAMPERDOWN High School rebounded from last Friday’s defeat against Jamaica College (JC) in Group B of their Digicel/Gatorade Schoolboy Manning Cup football competition with a 4-0 away win against Mona High yesterday.

Rohan Scott opened the scoring for the three-time winners in the first minute of play. But despite dominating their opponents for the majority of the game, the red-and-blue standard-bearers did not add to their tally until the 74th minute when Ackeem Christie headed home Hackeem Smith’s cross.

An own-goal from Tavari Walker put Camperdown 3-0 up with 11 minutes remaining and Smith completed the win after stealing possession and firing past Jevon Williams with eight minutes left.

The result pushed Camperdown to the top of the group with six points from three games — three more than St Jago, JC and Waterford High, who have all played one game.

Coach Christopher Bender said his players took time to settle down in the wet conditions, but he was pleased to come away with three points. “And we are getting better as the competition progresses,” he added.

Meanwhile, the close contest for Group E honours continued as Spanish Town High defeated Ascot High, 2-1, to join Holy Trinity at the top of the standings on seven points.

Kevon Nembhard netted both goals for the Spanish Town school. Holy Trinity lost sole leadership of the group after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Trench Town Comprehensive.

Meanwhile, Lucien Wolfe and Aveeno Mullings saw St Catherine High to their first victory after three matches — a 2-1 result over neighbours Jonathan Grant in their Spanish Town ‘derby’.

In Group C, champions St George’s College and Hydel High scored identical 1-0 victories over Dunoon Technical and Cumberland High, respectively.

Meanwhile, the other game in the group between Clan Carthy and Denham Town ended in a 2-2 tie.

Hydel and St George’s lead the Group with seven points each, followed by Clan Carthy and Cumberland on four apiece.

The competition continues this afternoon with Excelsior High facing former champions Norman Manley High at Mountain View and last season’s surprise package Penwood High tackling Greater Portmore High in Group A.

In Group B, St Jago High take on JC in the lone group game at St Jago, while in Group D, Tivoli Gardens High meet Haile Selassie High, Calabar High entertain Bridgeport High and St Mary’s College take on Innswood.

Group F matches will see Kingston Technical against Jose Marti Technical, Oberlin High versus Donald Quarrie and St Andrew College facing pre-season favourites Wolmer’s Boys’.

In Group G, Kingston College (KC) host Pembroke Hall High, Ardenne High welcome St Andrew Technical (STATHS) and Charlie Smith lock horns with Meadowbrook High. All matches begin at 3:30 pm.
