Cop freed in shooting of exotic dancer
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Garfield Edwards, the inspector of police who was charged with the shooting of an exotic dancer, was today freed in the Home Circuit Court.
Edwards was freed of a charge of wounding with intent after the court upheld a no-case submission by attorney Peter Champagnie, following the closing of the prosecution’s case on Friday.
Champagnie had argued that it could not be proven that the bullet that struck Nicola Webb in September 2002 was from the gun of the 57-year-old Edwards nor that it could it be proven that Edwards was the only police officer to discharge a firearm that night.
The police reported that Edwards fired in self defence after someone fired shots from a taxi in which Webb was travelling along Waterloo Road in St Andrew.
Webb was struck in the spine and was paralysed from the waist down. The State later settled with her to the tune of $12 million.
