King’s House ackee thief loses appeal
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Junior Christie, the homeless man who made headlines last November after he was sentenced to prison for three months for stealing ackees from the King’s House property, lost his appeal in the Court of Appeal today.
At the same time a warrant was issued for Christie’s arrest as he did not show up this morning for his appeal.
He is to now serve his three-month prison sentence.
The court ruled against penalising Cecil Warren, the man who had stood surety for Christie’s $30,000 bail pending the appeal, which was being supported by the Legal Aid Council.
Court of Appeal President Seymour Panton said that Christie has eight convictions, the majority of which had been suspended in the past. Panton said Christie also misled the RM court about his background.
“He has a history of dishonesty,” said Panton.
He said he hoped Warren has learnt that he cannot stand surety for people he doesn’t know.
