TOLL GATE, Clarendon — Portmore United’s indifferent start to the defence of their Red Stripe Premier League title continued yesterday with a drab goalless draw against Sporting Central Academy at Brancourt.

Sporting were unusually wasteful in possession but had the three best chances of the game, with Gregory Lewis — twice — and the usually reliable Levaughn Williams missing one-on-one chances early on.

The visiting Portmore side finished the stronger team but except for Ricardo Morris’ 55th-minute effort which crashed into the upright, had no real goalscoring opportunities.

With the point, the St Catherine outfit inched to four points from four games, but remained in the bottom half of the 12-team standings.

Coach Andre Waugh is nonetheless pleased with the progress of his young charges.

“It is not the start that we would have liked, but after our first two games we had no point and now we have four from our last two games which would indicate some form of progress,” he said.

While lamenting their woeful display in front of goal, Sporting Central coach Nigel Stewart was pleased with the point which saw his team inched to seven.

“I’m definitely not happy with the performances,” he said. “There’s no way we should have missed those three chances, but I will take the point.”
