A three-way battle for the president of the St James Football Association is looming after League Director Gregory Daley threw his hat in the ring yesterday.

Daley, a former referee who took over as the League Director last season is expected to go up against incumbent president Texchus Nembhard and Steve Bucknor when the Annual General Meeting that is due next month is called.

Daley said in a email to the media yesterday, that he is making himself available for the post, while Bucknor has been quoted in the media that he will seek the position for the second straight AGM.

Nembhard told Observer West “anything can happen” when asked if he will be on the ballot.

One of the first order of business for whoever wins the election will be to seek a sponsor for the St James Senior League, which was played without sponsor for the first time in over 70 years, last season.

Yesterday, Nembhard who told Observer West he had not ruled out contesting the election said he was surprised to learn via the media that Daley was putting himself up for the post.

Nembhard a retired police officer and a FIFA Referees Instructor had edged Bucknor by a single vote 42-41 in November 2010.

He told Observer West he had “taken a principled stance and took a few days away from the FA offices,” admitting that the ‘few days’ had gone into weeks but did not go into any details about what led to his actions.

He did say however, that his reservations had not been addressed by the FA, prompting his “sabbatical”.

Daley however, told Observer West that Nembhard’s absence did nothing to further the confidence in his leadership, “you cant take yourself away from football at this time,” he said.

“There is a need for strong leadership and I know I am able to provide this,” Daly said, adding that he would not challenge Nembhard for the post but questioned his lack of visibility since the start of new football season.

Daley further stated that his confidence was underpinned after consultation with delegates whom he has been in touch with on a daily basis.

“I have tested the waters to check my support and spoke to members of the Board and so far things are positive,” he stressed.
