Camperdown High consolidated their second place position in Zone B of the ISSA/Digicel/Gatorade Manning Cup football competition yesterday after their 2-0 win over Waterford High at Bellevue field.

Ackeem Anglin in the first half and a Kevon Deacon own goal in the second half boosted the Christopher Bender-coached team, who came into the match one point ahead of Waterford. Jamaica College lead the group on 12 points, two more than Camperdown High.

However, Waterford stayed third on six points, after the group’s other game between St Jago and Mona was not played because of a waterlogged field.

At Bellevue field, the home team took an early lead when Anglin fired them in front after only two minutes of play. But Waterford gave a good account of themselves afterwards and could have forced an equaliser.

However, 66 minutes into the contest the host extended their lead when Henry headed home from six yards.

Bender said the result was the one they had hoped for as it put distance between themselves and their opponents, who were hot on their heels coming into the match.

“This is three valuable points… they were a point behind us and we wanted to put a little distance between us and them,” he said.

Waterford’s coach, Michael Williams, thought his team could have taken something from the game had they not lapsed in concentration in vital areas of the field.

“We played well in the first half coming into the second half… but we started making mistakes in crucial areas and it cost us,” he said.

St Jago sit two points adrift of third place Waterford on four points, while Mona are still to get off the mark.

Meanwhile, in the lone Zone C game, Rushane Bailey scored twice for Dunoon to beat Clan Carthy 2-1 for their first points of the season.

Dunoon remained at the bottom one point behind Clan Carthy, while St George’s College lead the group on 13 points, followed by Hydel with 11, then Cumberland with seven and Denham Town on six.

In Zone D, Calabar climbed to second on 11 points after a 6-1 demolition of Haile Selassie. Romaine Morris led the way for the Marvin Tate-coached team with a brace.

Other strikes came from Paul Newman, Adrian Gordon, Chevaughn Nugent and Jahmari Thomas.

Calabar now trail leaders Bridgeport by two points and are a point ahead of third-placed Innswood.

In the group’s other game, Tivoli moved to seven points and kept themselves in contention for a second round berth after goals from Leon McLeon and Jehvorn Saulas gave them a 2-0 win over St Mary’s College.

In Zone E, Spanish Town overtook Ascot as leaders following their 2-1 win over Trench Town. Owen Walters scored both goals for the Anthony Thompson-coached team, who jumped to 12 points, two more than Ascot and Holy Trinity, while St Catherine follow on eight points.

In the other match in the zone, Nicholas Hamilton netted the game’s only goal as Holy Trinity stopped St Catherine 1-0.

Also, In Zone G, Pembroke Hall defeated Ardenne 3-1 at Ardenne.
