All set for trial of Vaz, Bicknell, Forbes

KINGSTON, Jamaica — All is now set for former Government minister Daryl Vaz, businessman Bruce Bicknell and a senior superintendent of police to stand trial on corruption charges.

The Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court was told on Wednesday that the prosecution has served all the relevant documents in the matter for the trial to start.

The case was adjourned until October 25, when a trial date could be set.

Meanwhile, the court again granted Bicknell permission to travel overseas from October 5 to 14.

The court was told that Queen’s Counsel KD Knight has joined the legal team that is representing Bicknell. 

He will appear along with attorney Peter Champagnie for Bicknell.

Vaz has been charged with breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act while Bicknell and the senior superintendent, James Forbes, are charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The charges stem from allegations that Bicknell attempted to bribe a police sergeant in April and the later involvement of Vaz and Forbes in the matter.
