LEADERS Charlie Smith Compehensive continued to cruise in Zone G of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup schoolboy competition after brushing aside second-from-bottom Ardenne High, 5-0, for their sixth win in seven matches at the Tony Spaulding Complex yesterday.

The home team led 1-0 after the first half through a Shamar Walsh’s 13th minute strike. But the Jerome Waite-coached team was wasteful in front of goal and should have added to their tally before the interval.

However, five minutes after the break, Shannon Brown made it 2-0 when he curled home a beauty from the edge of the area. Lennox Russell made it 3-0 in the 58th, when he weaved his way through the opposition’s defence and fired past Matthew Campbell in goal.

Walsh added his second and Charlie Smith’s fourth in the 76th after Rayon Passley also wormed his way through the defence and the ball rolled kindly into the path of the pint-size midfielder, who slotted home.

Substitute Aruna Anderson completed the rout nine minutes from time when he stabbed home a low cross from Russell, after a good build up.

Waite said with the matches coming thick and fast, he is trying to rotate his best players so they will be physically ready for the second round.

Ardenne’s coach Andrew Hines refused to comment.

Meanwhile, Kingston College (KC) kept within touching distance of the frontrunners with a 4-0 win away to Meadowbrook, while St Andrew Technical (STATHS) turned back Pembroke Hall High, 2-1.

Charlie Smith head the group with 19 points — three ahead of KC, who are followed by STATHS on 11 points and Pembroke Hall eight.

In Zone F, Wolmer’s Boys’ continued their perfect start to the season after edging Donald Quarrie High 1-0 away from home for their seventh win in as many outings to lead with standings with 21 points.

Jose Marti climbed into second spot with 10 points after their thrilling 5-4 win over Oberlin. Donald Quarrie, meanwhile, slipped to third spot on nine points after their loss.

In Zone D, Calabar stopped St Mary’s College, 3-0, to stay second, while Innswood High defeated Tivoli Gardens, 2-0, to remain third.

Bridgeport are atop the standings with 16 points, followed by Calabar on 14 and Innswood with 13. Tivoli are next best in the group with seven points.

The competition continues this afternoon with Greater Portmore playing Campion and Penwood taking on Norman Manley in Zone A.

In Zone C, defending champions St George’s entertain Denham Town High, Hydel travel to Dunoon and Cumberland host Clan Carthy.

In the lone Zone E match, Spanish Town face Holy Trinity in a top-of-the-table clash at the Prison Oval. All games start at 3:30 pm.
