STGC hit Denham Town for six
CHAMPIONS St George’s College maintained pole position in Zone C of the ISSA/Digicel/Gatorade Manning Cup football competition yesterday with a clinical 6-0 win over Denham Town at Winchester Park.
The win pushed the Neville ‘Bertis’ Bell-coached team to 17 points, two ahead of Hydel, who stopped Dunoon 2-0.
Former national Under-17 midfielders, Zhelano Barnes and Cordel Benbow led the way for the North Street school with braces, while Andre Lewis and Oshane Boothe registered the others.
The home team went at their opponents from the first whistle and Benbow opened the scoring after just six minutes of play. Barnes made it 2-0 six minutes later and added a second on the half hour, as the hosts went into the break with a 3-0 lead.
On the hour mark, Andre Lewis made it 4-0 before Benbow scored his second of the game in the 70th minute.
Substitute Oshane Boothe sealed the win for the group leaders when he scored from six yards with 10 minutes to go.
In the group’s other game, Cumberland and Clan Carthy played to a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, in the lone Zone E match, Spanish Town overtook Holy Trinity as zone leaders after Owen Walters scored both goals in a 2-1 victory.
Spanish Town now sit atop the points standing with 15 points, followed by Holy Trinity with 13, then St Catherine with 11 and Ascot, 10.
In Zone A, Norman Manley joined Excelsior on top of the table with 12 points, after they turned back Penwood 2-1.
The two teams will now meet in what could be the group decider tomorrow.
In the other game, Greater Portmore (seven points) defeated Campion College 2-0, to overtake Penwood by a point.
In the lone game today, Jonathan Grant oppose Ascot at Prison Oval at 3:30 pm.
