TUCKER, St James — Discontent over disciplinary actions taken by former Montego Bay United coach Neider dos Santos might have led to his sudden resignation Tuesday morning, says club president Orville Powell.

Powell told the Jamaica Observer Tuesday that he had received dos Santos’ resignation and blamed the negative attitude of some of the players for the Brazilian’s action.

Dr Dean Weatherly, who was in charge of the team for two games last season, replacing Hugh Solomon before assisting dos Santos, who took over in November, was scheduled to assume responsibility for the team last evening when MBU hosted defending champions Portmore United at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Powell, who said he was “disappointed but not surprised” at the move, said there was discontent among some of the players over a disciplinary action taken by the coach last weekend.

He said Dos Santos had left out six players from the team that lost 1-2 at Boys’ Town and had just two substitutes on the bench after the players broke curfew on Saturday.

Powell told the Observer there was growing discontent among some of the players over the strict discipline employed by dos Santos and his rigorous training schedule.

“It is a real disappointment as he had a lot to offer,” Powell said of the coach he first worked with while both were at Village United.

Montego Bay United had won just once in five games and their 0-3 start was the first time he was losing three straight games as a coach, Powell told the Observer.

The MBU president said it was now up to Weatherly as they had no intentions of going to look for another coach any time soon.
