The 2012-13 Inter-Collegiate Sports Association competition gets cracking this morning at 9:00 with a one-day rally comprising men’s basketball, men’s football, badminton, table tennis, and netball in fastnet format at Mico University College, host campus for the first time.

An opening ceremony and dress parade will precede the matches which will begin at 11:30 am. Some 600 students from 19 institutions will be present.

Sixteen teams will take part in men’s football which kicks off the opening fixture of the Greg Garrell Knockout where GC Foster College are defending champions.

Eight matches will be played today, four at Mico playing field and the other four at neighbouring Wolmer’s Boys ground.

The marquee match of the day are defending champions GC Foster College going up against the home team. All eight winners will advance to next Tuesday’s second round of the competition.

In netball, St Hugh’s High will host preliminary matches with semi-finals and final to be played at Mico. Defending champions University of the West Indies are expected to take on Mico in the final as both teams possess several national representatives who just returned from a three-match series in England.

The UWI team will be led by national captain Nadine Bryan, Female Athlete of the Year Malysha Kelly and former Miconian Vanessa Walker.

For Mico, the likes of Kimone Tulloch, Patricia McCalla and Vangalee Williams will be on display.

Apart from Mico, UWI, GC Foster College, other institutions to take part are Church Teachers’ College, Moneague College, Caribbean Maritime Institute, College of Agriculture, Science and Education, and the Edna Manley College of the Performing Arts.
