MAY PEN, Clarendon — Assistant coach Max Straw is confident Humble Lion can have a successful Red Stripe Premier League campaign after recovering from a stuttering start, but said they won’t get carried away.

Humble Lion, last season’s fourth place finishers, opened their season with three defeats in four games but have since registered three successive wins to go within four points of the lead in fifth.

Straw is now hoping their latest victory — a 1-0 result over Boys’ Town on Sunday — will set the tone for the rest of the season.

“We know that to win the Premier League you’ll have to get to one of the top two positions by the end of the round, so that’s basically our focus,” Straw said.

“We are satisfied with the effort of the players but we won’t get too excited about one set of results because we know it’s like a racing car, after every race you have to pull it down and get it ready again.”

It’s not the first time Humble Lion have had a slow start, but it’s the first time they have recovered so well. Straw believes it’s a sign of growth from the players and coaching staff.

“The system that we have been coaching these players is basically in them already so the slow start was really because of the hiatus in our pre-season training,” the former Tivoli Gardens, Harbour View and Arnett Gardens coach, explained.

“We were five points below the red line two years ago and Lenny (Hyde) and I weren’t used to that but we managed to set things right, so we know how this team performs. Sometimes we are up and sometimes we are down.

“There are other hurdles that we will have to cross from time to time so we just have to keep our feet on the ground and make sure we are ready for the next game. That’s the most important thing; taking it one step at a time,” he said.
