Expect fireworks in Walker KO
THE quarter-finals of the Walker Cup KO competition kicks off today with pre-season favourites Wolmer’s Boys’ and defending champions St George’s College set for a tantalising contest at Constant Spring at 3:00 pm.
Today’s other quarter-final game of the ISSA/Digicel/Gatorade competition will pit Group G winners Charlie Smith against Group G runners-up Kingston College (KC) in the curtain-raiser at the venue at 1:00 pm.
In another pair of quarter-final matches tomorrow, also at Constant Spring, Excelsior High face Bridgeport High and Jamaica College (JC) meet Spanish Town High. The semi-finals will be played next Tuesday, with the final scheduled for November 24.
Defending and last year’s triple champions St George’s will face their first real test of the season after topping their preliminary round group in masterful fashion, capped by a 15-0 drubbing of Clan Carthy High last Saturday in their final group match at Winchester Park.
The Neville Bell-coached ‘Light Blues’ will be led by last season’s leading goalscorer Kendon Anderson, with support likely to come from the likes of Romario Jones and Paul Doyle.
Always dangerous at this stage of the schoolboy season, St George’s will, however, have to contend with a Wolmer’s side that has been just as impressive in the preparatory phase.
In fact, the Heroes’ Circle boys have been ominously prolific, with their most stirring result being a 14-0 whipping of hapless St Andrew College who, ironically, held them to a 0-0 draw in their return game in Group F.
The Wolmer’s charge will be led by former KC stalwart and national senior player Jorginho James, who transferred to the maroon-and-gold standard-bearers this season. He should be capably assisted by a slew of talented players, including former National Under-17 striker Jason Wright.
The second match should be just as exciting, with the unbeaten Charlie Smith having dropped points only once this season in a draw with today’s opponents, KC.
Though ‘Charlie’ are generally thought to possess too much fire-power for the North Street boys, having already defeated them this season, the Donovan Hayles-conditioned ‘Purples’ will be pumped up as they strive to evoke memories of their glory days.
