USAIN Bolt had a memorable summer with his three gold medals at the London Olympics, but the racehorse named in his honour, Usain Colt, has had less time with five unsuccessful runs.

The son of Royal Applause, whose owners included Prince Harry, is one of a massive batch of 80 horses trained by Richard Hannon, which entered at the Tattersalls Horses in Training sales at end of the month.

Bruce still on the loose

Bruceontheloose registered a rare piece of history by recording the first ever beaver-trick of wins in the $200,000 Grade One Caribbean Champion Stakes, scoring unchallenged in the five-horse showpiece, at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, recently.

Sent off at what seems a generous price of 1-2, the John O’Brien-trained grey, owned by Tres Amigos and ridden by Nobel Abrego, scored by over three lengths from second favourite Galveston, Esquire and Onetokeep, in a good 1:53.52 minutes over the 1,800 metres trip on a fast main track.

At the off, Esquire was sent into an early lead, from Galveston, with Onetokeep third, ‘Bruce’ fourth and Sam’s Hero fifth. Turning up the backstretch, the lead was unchanged, but the trailing trio of Onetokeep, Sam’s Hero and ‘Bruce’ formed a line of four alongside Galveston.

Abrego placed ‘Bruce’ in the perfect spot, giving him a clear run on the outside of the field. He then took the decision to commit ‘Bruce’ for home early, setting the grey alight to send the small crowd into a frenzy. Galveston came with a sustained run, but ‘Bruce’ had already sealed the deal.

Two races earlier, Candy Man recorded an upset victory in the 1,200-metre Caribbean Sprint Championship, halting the main course unbeaten run of Trinidad Derby Stakes winner, Free Passage. The chestnut son of Candy Ride/Pouilly Fuisse scored by 1 1/2 lengths, from Nettoyer, Free Passage and Nakita, in a good 1:13.52 minutes.

Skyline Pigeon, Free Passage and Candy Man led the way from the off. Free Passage, sent off as the evens favourite, was switched by Ricky Jadoo to the outside, splitting Candy Man and Skyline Pigeon, with the rest of the field chasing. Heading to the corner, Free Passage took over the running, but Candy Man, sent off at 14-1, shadowed his every move.

At the head of the straight, it seemed as though Free Passage would keep his unbeaten tag intact. But Candy Man swept by his stablemate for the upset victory.

Only one person won the superfecta, which paid a whopping $27,127.

Earlier in the day, Nature’s Reality took the opener from the speedy Imperial Ruler. In the second race, Jadoo did the honours aboard Joezel on the turf.

Malibu Heights recorded his first success in these parts in the third race to give jockey Nadir Vargas his second win of the season. And trainer Richard Stephen’s Renewed Dream recorded a major upset in the fourth race, at odds of 45-1, to lose her maiden tag on the turf.

Derby winning trainer Derick Mosca’s good run of success continued as he recorded back-to-back successes with Candy Man and First Encounter in the fifth and sixth races, respectively. And Onefortheroad scored from stablemate, Chief’s Nephew and Santa Rosa Park to give Mosca his third success of the day.
