This 1970 hit was written in 1962 by Tony Joe Wright. The smooth vocals of Benton mixed with the intoxicating lyrics made the song an instant hit for the star. The repeated reference to rain was used as a metaphor for the sadness the singer felt.

It Will Rain – Bruno Mars

Cause there’ll be no sunlight/ If I lose you, baby/ There’ll be no clear skies/ If I lose you, baby/ Just like the clouds, my eyes will do the same/ If you walk away/ Every day, it’ll rain, rain, rain.

The single was the third to be released from the hit album Doo Wops & Hooligans. Unlike the two previously released singles from that album — which were instant number ones, It Will Rain peaked at number three on the Billboard Charts. The song describes the pain felt when one loses their true love, and was featured on the soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1.

Originally recorded in 1973, this single is easily one of Peebles’ most recognisable songs. The single became an instant classic and has been covered on numerous occasions over the years. Some of the most recognisable covers have been done by rapper Missy Elliot, Tina Turner, Humblepie, Michael Bolton, and Seal.

Prince Purple – Rain

The song was the title track from Prince’s sixth studio album. The album shattered record sales and was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as the second best album of all time.

Here Comes the Rain Again – Eurythmics

British duo Eurythmics wrote and released Here Comes The Rain Again in 1983 off their album Touch. Michael Kayman did the melancholy string arrangements with the help of an orchestra to give the song a more dramatic effect, as the song depicts the pain of unrequited love.
