Burton breaks drought as Gillingham crush Scunthorpe
GILLINGHAM, England (CMC) — Veteran Reggae Boy Deon Burton netted his first FA Cup goal in seven years as League Two Gillingham dumped League One Scunthorpe United out of the prestigious competition with a 4-0 defeat here Saturday.
The 36-year-old Burton, one of the stars of Jamaica’s heady World Cup campaign 14 years ago, headed in Myles Weston’s cross in the 65th minute to put the hosts 2-0 up at the Priestfield Stadium.
Matt Fish had put the hosts ahead six minutes earlier, after the first half had finished goalless.
Gillingham added a third when substitute Danny Kedwell, on the pitch for just five minutes, converted from the spot after Danny Jackman brought down Josh Walker in the area.
Adam Birchall rounded off the rout for Gillingham, poking home from close range in the third minute of injury time at the end.
Burton joined the south-east England outfit in August on a one-year deal.
