JAMAICA’s Combined Martial Arts team captured a gold and silver medals at the 2012 International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) World Championships which ended on Sunday in Valkenberg Netherlands.

Oshane Murray, 19, secured gold in the men’s middleweight, while Nicholas Dussard claimed a silver medal in the lightweight division.

Meanwhile, Minister Without Portfolio with Responsibility for Sport in the Office of the Prime Minister, Natalie Neita-Headley, congratulated the team for their performance in the Netherlands.

“We can take heart that our country’s future in sport is lying in the strength, talent and determination of outstanding young men such as Oshane Murray, Nicholas Dussard and Adrian Moore, who also competed,” Neita-Headley said.

“Our sportsmen and sportswomen continue to perform at a level internationally that is personally inspiring to me, and no doubt our entire nation, whether they live at home or in the Diaspora.

Neita-Headley described Murray’s gold medal as a wonderful feat which should bring much joy to the University of Technology where he is studying.

As for Dussard, the Minister said: “(He) demonstrates the potential of our martial arts practitioners… This is his 11th tournament for the year, and he is closing the season with nine gold medals and two silver medals.

“Dussard shows the resilience we have as a people, as he had only one minute to rest after defeating the English competitor to return to the ring to face the Iranian contender. He lost the gold medal by a very slight margin.”

The athletes return to Jamaica 1this week.
