Wolmer’s, Immaculate, Campion cop tennis titles
WOLMER’S Boys, Immaculate Conception and Campion College won the respective age group titles at the Mayberry High Schools Tennis Championships which ended at Eric Bell tennis Centre last Sunday.
Wolmer’s, coached by David Sanguinetti, captured the Under-19 crown by defeating arch-rivals Campion, coached by the Russell family, 4-1 in the final to triumph for a third consecutive year.
Defending Under-19 boys champions Wolmer’s won a close first game as Jonathon Goldson clipped Kareem Marshall, 7-6 (7-3 tie-breaker). They went up 2-0 with Audie Smith beating Ian Bennett, 6-3, in the second singles match.
The champions went up 3-0 when Roshane Allen beat Phillip Shum, 6-1. The fourth singles, however, produced a keen battle between captains Romario Moncriffe of Wolmer’s and Donclair Brown of Campion, with the latter winning the tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-2), to halt their losing streak.
Another keen duel ensued, but this time was in the first of three doubles where Cady Bjoo and Matthew Dennie Foster pulled off an exciting tie-breaker win, 7-6 (7-4), over the Campion pair of Shum and Christopher Rowe to clinch the tie 4-1 and the title.
Meanwhile, Immaculate’s Under-19 girls, coached by Dwayne Pagon, staged off a spirited challenge from first-time finalists Montego Bay High, 4-3, clinch the title in the last double match after they were locked at 3-3.
It was Immaculate’s six straight win and their 13th in the last 16 years.
In the final, unseeded Montego Bay won the opening singles over top seed Immaculate through Shaadae Nickle, who defeated Rhea Thompson, 6-4, but Megan Veira levelled the tie at 1-1 with an easy 6-1 win over Shanice Parkinson.
Shaddae Findley put the Montegonians back in front with a crushing 6-0 win over Danielle Grant and again the tie was locked at 2-2 as Alex Marzouca of Immaculate cruised past Katlin Robertson, 6-1.
With three doubles matches to be played to decide the winner, the Montego Bay pair of Findley and Hydee Lee beat Chanice Smith and Rebecca Daley in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-5), to regain the lead, 3-2.
Immaculate won the second doubles, 6-4, with the pair of Veira and Marzouca beating Nickle and Robertson. Immaculate won the third and final doubles with Grant and Thompson beating Parkinson and Shennell Johnson to clinch the tie 4-3 and the title.
