Late goal gives Lewis winning start at Arnett
VISHUNAL Harris’ added time goal gave new coach Calvin Lewis a winning start to his Arnett Gardens career in their 2-1 win over Boys’ Town in the Trench Town derby at Tony Spaulding Complex on Sunday.
Jason Moore fired Arnett in front after only three minutes, but Daemeon Benjamin found an equaliser for Boys’ Town in first-half added time. The game seemed destined for a draw until Harris’ striker at the end.
The defeat continued the miserable start to the second round for the first End-of-Round champions who have now gone four matches without a win and have slipped from third to sixth in the table with 23 points.
Arnett, on the other hand, moved up two places to third on 24 points. Lewis was pleased with the start.
“It’s good to start with a win, especially in a derby game… and I must commend the players for the effort they put out,” he said.
However, he conceded there is work to be done if they are to continue this trend.
Spectators had barely settled into their seats when Moore picked up a ball in midfield and blasted a well-struck effort from outside the area past Kirk Porter in the Boys’ Town goal.
But Boys’ Town, who gave up home advantage to maximise on the gate receipt at the more secure Tony Spaulding Complex, responded and were only denied an equaliser by under-pressure goalkeeper Damion Hyatt.
However, the custodian was helpless to stop Benjamin’s equaliser after the midfielder coasted in on the blind side of his defenders to redirect a header into the top corner of the goal.
After the interval, Boys’ Town had two superb chances, but Nicholas McMorris could not keep his header down from a corner, and minutes later, Romeo Parkes broke in behind the Arnett defence, but could not keep his shot on target.
Arnett flipped the switch after the hour mark with the introduction of Harris and Gerald Neil to shore up the right-back position, but despite their constant threats, the final ball was a let-down.
With the game seemingly headed for a draw, Leon Strickland carved his way through the Boys’ Town defence and delivered the perfect assist for the arriving Harris, who made no mistake.
Boys’ Town coach Andrew Price said the lapse in concentration cost them dearly.
“We dominated for large periods but could not find the back of the net… but the player (Strickland) dribbled some 20 yards and nobody closed him down,” he said.
