Music and more for A Starry Night
PLANS are in place for the fund-raising concert Starry Night, set for the lawns of Jamaica House tomorrow.
According to organisers, the event, which will feature American songstress Regina Belle, Barbadian sax man Arturo Tappin and Jamaica’s Ibo Cooper and Friends, promises to be an ‘out of this world’ experience.
Committee member Joan Young Davis says patrons will be taken on an inter-galactic voyage on entry.
“Once you enter you will step onto the launch pad from which one can view the wonders of the galaxy from a spaceship,” she explains.
The look and feel for this galactic experience has been created by local decorators and event stylists including Maureen Capleton, Michelle Lee, Paul Hamilton, and Lawrence Tulloch.
Young Davis explains that after this entry, patrons will be invited to taste the fare of the planets.
“The menu for each planet has been created by Jamacan chefs including Lorraine Fung, Jacqui Tyson and Dennis McIntosh. The food will be paired with wines from from CPJ Distributors,” Young Davis adds.
With regard to the entertainment package, she says a decision was taken to broaden the target audience, hence the inclusion of the two foreign acts.
“In the past we have always had local acts on Starry Night — last year was Myrna Hague and Tessanne Chin. We decided to go for Regina Belle, not just for her R&B repertoire, but also her gospel leanings. Afterall, the event is being organised by the United Church to raise funds for two homes run by the church — Mount Olivett and Pringle Boys’ Home,” she notes.
“Arturo Tappin was chosen for his jazz influence while Ibo Cooper and Friends is a tribute to Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of Independence,” Young Davis says.
