Oil leak from damaged ship contained in Bahamas
NASSAU, Bahamas – The owner of a salvage company says a damaged cargo ship in the Bahamas has leaked more than 1,000 gallons (3,785 litres) of oil.
Ray Darville of Overseas Marine Group Ltd accused the government Tuesday of not cleaning up the oil leaked by the Panamanian-flagged vessel named Eugenia. The ship is owned by Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Co.
Darville says officials at Freeport Harbor in Grand Bahama island contracted Bahamas Oil Refining Co to deal with the spill.
Transport Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin said Monday that the ship’s hull was breached somehow off Grand Bahama.
Government officials had no concerns of any further spillage and were satisfied the oil spill had been cleaned up and poses no threat to the environment, reported The Freeport News on Wednesday.
According to the newspaper, the ship’s leaking tank had been filled with water and engineers were assessing how best to repair the damage. The ship had been returned to the Freeport Container Port and three vessels that had oil on their hull as a result of the spill had all been cleaned up, it was reported.
