THE final weekend of 2012 seemed to have ended on a low key with only one reported fatal shooting incident.

The police, however, seized three illegal firearms and several rounds of ammunition and took two people into custody in connection with two of the weapons, the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) said.

In the shooting incident which reportedly occurred in Top Hill, Junction, St Elizabeth, an unidentified man was killed on Saturday about 10:15 pm. But up to Observer press time CCN was still awaiting further details on the incident.

Another shooting incident was also reported in Sligoville, St Catherine but no one was killed.

In that incident, the Sligoville police reported that a businessman was injured during an early morning robbery on Saturday.

The man was reportedly at his home about 2:00 am when he was pounced upon by three armed men who shot him. The men then reportedly escaped with cash, jewellery and cellular phones.

The injured man was rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was treated and sent home. The police have since detained one person in connection with the incident.

All three illegal firearms were seized on Saturday in three different parishes.

In the first incident which occurred about 3:15 in Highgate, St Mary, police reportedly went to an abandoned building in the community of Sidding where they recovered a Titan Tiger .38 Revolver and five .38 cartridges. No arrest was made in that case.

Some two hours later, police seized another weapon in Content, Crofts Hill in Clarendon in an operation about 5:30 pm. They held a man and allegedly recovered a 9mm Springfield rifle loaded with a magazine containing 11 9mm rounds in his possession.

The man was taken into custody, however, his identity is being withheld pending further investigation.

In the other incident, police reportedly seized a Browning 9-millimetre pistol with 13 ninemillimetre rounds, following a robbery at a nightclub along Port Henderson Road in St Catherine about 9:30 pm.

According to police report, a gunman attempted to rob patrons at the club but was attacked and held by the patrons who then summoned the police. The man was taken into custody and the firearm seized.

In addition, there was a motor vehicle crash along Mannings Hill Road in Kingston in which a woman was injured.

CCN reported that the woman hit the back of another motor vehicle and collided into a wall. She was rushed to the Kingston Public Hospital where she was admitted.

The Observer did not ascertain her condition at press time.
