PORTMORE United captured the LIME St Catherine Happy Sutherland Knockout title with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Rivoli United at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

Portmore United, who were gaining their seventh lien on the trophy, walked away with the trophy and $150,000 winning prize, while Rivoli United received $80,000 for their losing effort.

Rivoli’s Anthony Greenland gave them the lead in the 14th minute after goalkeeper Kemar Foster failed to hold onto a low, feeble Devon Hodges shot.

In form Ricardo Morris pulled Portmore United level in the 41st minute, scrambling home after intense pressure.

Then defender Ryan Wellington gave Portmore the advantage in the 51st minute, heading home from a corner kick.

The diminutive and speedy Alanzo Adlam easily converted from the penalty spot in the 75th minute to seal an emphatic victory.

Winning coach Andre Waugh said this victory was crucial and they will use it as a motivational push in the all-island premier league.

“This was very important to us in winning this title. Every time a team plays against Portmore United you can expect them to double or triple their effort and Rivoli came out and really pushed us,” said Waugh.

“Kudos to our players, they stuck to the task and we know that the game is won over 90 minutes and we just rode the storm and came out on top,” he noted.

LIME’s vice-president, marketing, Carlo Redwood, was more than pleased with the proceedings.

“It’s a big thing for LIME to carry what is a community-based final into the limelight and bringing it live on TV is a momentous occasion for us,” said Redwood, referring to the fact that the game was broadcast live on TVJ.

“It is really emphasising our focus on developing sport from a developmental level and interacting with communities, which is all that this is about,” he added.

Portmore United’s right back, Trevol Smith, won the MVP of the final award despite finishing the game with his head bandaged from an early injury.
