Raja Hindustani in the nick of time
JOCKEY Omar Walker came in from the cold with a pleasing four-timer to highlight Wednesday’s 10-race card at Caymanas Park and immediately sparked interest in his flagging career since winning the last of his four consecutive Jockeys’ Championships in 2010.
Not to be outdone was champion jockey Dane Nelson, who, starved for a win with eight of the 10 races complete, brought the 2-1 chance Raja Hindustani with a scorching late run on the outside to win the day’s $516,600 Howard Phillips Memorial Trophy feature in a driving finish from the 6-5 favourite, Runjohnny Run, by a neck in the penultimate ninth race.
Trained by Anthony Nunes for owners Gemini Stables, Raja Hindustani ran 1,100 metres in a time of 1:07.4 minutes to open his four-year-old career the second time of asking.
Earlier, Walker outmanoeuvred some really fast Overnight Allowance horses in the third race on the card with the American-bred filly City Flight, the 2-5 favourite for trainer Gary Subratie, to set his four-timer in motion. Two races later Walker took 6-5 favourite Emergence across the line for trainer Lawrence Freemantle, for his second; Lady Foreman, another 2-5 favourite in the sixth, also for trainer Subratie, and he completed the quadruple of wins atop the 9-5 bet Ethos for trainer Wayne Parchment in the seventh.
In the day’s Howard Phillips, Raja Hindustani, who is a run on sprinter, looked hopelessly out of it after turning for home, as the nimble-footed She’s So Special, ridden by Prince Holder, took the first run.
However, the four-year-old filly began to come back to the field and Runjohnny Run, who alternated the lead with She’s So Special, renewed his challenge and looked home and dried. But while Runjohnny Run had the ascendancy and showed more determination than usual, Nelson had Raja Hindustani working up a storm from below the distance and he exploded in the final metres to blow by the leader for a scintillating win at the death.
“Despite the distance away from the front-runners, I could see that they were coming back while my horse was gathering momentum and this made me confident that I had them measured and would get there in time,” Nelson said afterwards.
She’s So Special, a 5-1 shot, held on for third, while Rocketeer, ridden by leading claiming apprentice Shameree Muir, closed steadily to complete the frame as a 14-1 betting option in the field of 12.
Raja Hindustani, a bay gelding by Coded Warning out of Miss Chacha Dancer (Imperial Falcon) bred by Rentals and Moore, was winning for the third time from 12 career starts and earned $282,020 as the winner’s share for earning of $1,68,550 lifetime.
