Again?! – UTech student is latest victim of fallen goalpost

A University of Technolgy (UTech) student is currently in hospital after a goalpost fell on him during a friendly game of scrimmage football on the school compound yesterday.

Laurence Garriques, acting director of sports at UTech, confirmed to the Jamaica Observer yesterday the latest in a series of goal post incidents across the island.

“I have heard stories, and I am not 100 per cent clear, but the basic thing is that the students were using the goal post, but moreso, the person was swinging on the goalpost and fell off badly pulling down the goalpost on himself,” said Garriques.

He theorised that with the football season over, the students probably pulled the movable goal posts on the field.

“Our football season is really out, so we have put the goals aside basically because it is mainly cricket and rugby going on,” said Garriques.

He also said that the students were playing scrimmage, and at some point during a break, “the person was swinging on it (goal)”.

The student is at the University Hospital of the West Indies suffering from injury to his chest.

“I heard he was in intensive care. I am trying to ascertain his name and particulars, but I have not got that as yet. I have not gotten any full report from anyone yet,” reiterated Garriques.

Over the years, there have been several incidents of falling goal posts in Jamaica. In 2011, three persons were killed, including six-year-old Jevaughn Bailey, a student of Chester Primary School in St Ann.

Bailey was killed on October 11 when a metal football goal post fell and hit him on the head when he attempted to climb on it. He was reportedly playing with friends during the lunch break on the school’s playing field when the tragedy struck.

Earlier that year, two boys died in separate incidents in Kingston and Westmoreland after they, too, were playing during their break time.
