Crocodile nesting season begins
THE National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is advising the public that it is now crocodile nesting season. Accordingly, extreme caution is to be exercised in traversing areas close to swamps, mangrove wetlands, and gullies or canals adjacent to these areas.
Affected areas include Portmore, St Catherine; south Clarendon, as well as wetlands in St Thomas, St Elizabeth and Kingston.
Crocodiles nest between March and August and become more aggressive during this period as they are very protective of their young. The agency is therefore appealing to the public not to provoke crocodiles; they are sensitive animals and may react aggressively if cornered or attacked.
The crocodile is one of Jamaica’s many endangered species and is protected by law. Capturing or killing the animal is an offence under the Wild Life Protection Act. Persons found guilty of this offence are liable to a fine of up to $100,000 and/or 12 months imprisonment.
If crocodiles are seen in areas outside their natural habitat where they may pose a threat to humans, or if they are being harassed or harmed, call NEPA at 1-888-991-5005 or 754-7540 or the nearest police station.
