EDWIN Allen are well on course to notch their second JAAA trophy at the 103rd staging of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships after amassing 157.5 points from 19 finals on yesterday’s penultimate day of the five-day meet at the National Stadium.

Holmwood Technical are second with 118.5 points, ahead of St Jago on 88 and Vere Technical on 80 points. Hydel Group of Schools are fifth with 52 points. Wolmer’s Girls are sixth on 30, followed by St Andrew High, 28, Manchester High, 22, Convent of Mercy Academy Alpha, on 18, with St Elizabeth Technical rounding out the top 10 on 16 points.

Edwin Allen won two of the 100m finals with Shellece Clark capturing the Class Three in 11.92 seconds, the same time as second-placed Rushelle Burton of St Andrew High. Edwin Allen got more points with Aaliyah Hopkins finishing fourth in 12.25 seconds.

The champions were at it again in the Class One 100m as Monique Spencer did 11.59 seconds to win ahead of the Holmwood pair of Kedisha Dallas and Chanice Bonner.

With approximately 26 finals remaining today, Edwin Allen are well poised to get close to the 365 points they amassed last year and should be chased by Holmwood Technical.

Two records were broken and one equalled on day four of the championships. Rushelle Burton of St Andrew High erased the 17-year-old record in the Class Three 80m hurdles of 11.33secs, lowering it to 11.27secs in winning semi-final one. Brittani Thompson of the Hydel Group of Schools also went below the previous record with 11.31 seconds in winning semi-final three.

Kimone Shaw of St Jago erased Dianna Johnson’s Class Three 100m record of 11.90 seconds, lowering it to 11.75 seconds. Shaneil English of Hydel was second with 12.09 seconds.

Meanwhile, Latoya Greaves’ 10-year-old record of 13.38 seconds in Class Two 100m hurdles was equalled by Peta Gaye Williams of Camperdown High in winning semi-final three.

In the first final of the day, Shardia Lawrence of Vere Technical High captured the triple jump with a leap of 12.87m, as Holmwood gained 13 valuable points finishing second and third with Tamara Moncrieffe (12.50m) and Latavia Coombs (12.41m).

Two times defending champion Sabina Allen formerly of Vere, now at St Jago, finished fifth with 12.22m, way below her season’s best of 12.46m. Her teammate Shamoya McNeil finished fourth with 12.33m for nine points.

Having missed out in the triple jump, Edwin Allen struck back winning the javelin Open, courtesy of Olivia Leckford with 38.97m. St Andrew Technical’s Ayesha Champagnie finished second with 37.83m. Holmwood grabbed fourth and fifth for nine points with Natanya McNeish (36.19m), and Gleneve Grange (34.78m).

The defending champions then rattled up 16 points in the Class Two discus throw, thanks to first and second-placed finishes with Rochelle Frazer (46.31m) and Paul-Ann Gayle (44.02m). Frazer just missed the record of 46.64m set by Gleneve Grange last year.

Vere Technical, courtesy of Shadae Lawrence, got third with a throw of 41.45m, while her teammate Kiona Bradshaw was seventh for two additional points.

St Andrew High’s Chennel Palmer won the Class One high jump with a leap of 1.76m. Krista-Gay Taylor of Convent of Mercy Academy Alpha was second with 1.73m, ahead of Tamoya Walters of St Jago High, who cleared the same height.

Devia Brown of Hydel captured the Class Three discus with 40.02m ahead of Fiona Richards of Buff Bay with 37.49m. Vere’s Avery Pryce was third with 37.17m.

Holmwood scored a quinella and 16 points in the Class Two 1,500m as Lisa Buchanan, while leading with 10 metres from the finish line, awaited, then threw her arms around teammate Shanieke Watson and crossed the line together. However, Watson was adjudged the winner by the narrowest of margins.
