Adlam signs for Finnish club, as Portmore make coaching changes

Portmore United FC attacker Alanzo Adlam has signed a season-long loan agreement with Finnish Premier League Club IFK Mariehamn.

The deal became effective March 13 this year.

Adlam, who represented the national Under-20 and Under-23 football teams, was Portmore’s top marksman since the 2011-2012 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) season and was an integral cog in their winning that league championship.

In a statement released through Portmore, Adlam expressed his satisfaction at getting the opportunity to play in Europe and thanked the St Catherine-based club for helping in his development.

“This is like a dream come true. It has always been my ambition to ply my trade overseas, but more specifically in Europe. Portmore United has prepared me well for this journey and I look forward to making the best of this opportunity,” said the senior Reggae Boyz representative.

Former Portmore United player Steven Morrissey had a very successful spell at IFK Mariehamn before his transfer to the Danish Superliga with Silkeborg. Morrissey was third on the top scorers chart last season with 15 goals.

In the meantime, Portmore also announced the resignation of Andre Waugh as head coach and director of football, also effective March 13.

According to the release, Waugh’s roles as a lecturer at the Caribbean School of Sports Science and as physical trainer for the senior and Under-17 Reggae Boyz limited his ability to tend to his duties with the defending RSPL champions.

Waugh will now revert to his position as technical director of the club’s youth programme.

His former deputy Geoffrey Hewitt will assist him with the youngsters.

Former national defender Linval Dixon will step in as interim head coach, while former Reggae Boy teammate Paul Young is expected to take the top job permanently in two months’ time.

In a release issued by Portmore, Young said: “I’m humbled… both humbled and thrilled by this appointment, more so because it provides me with the opportunity to return to coaching in Jamaica and with a programme I’ve had great belief in, and also enjoyed tremendous success.”

Dixon was also grateful for the opportunity to return to the coaching staff at Portmore.

“This opportunity is one I welcome with open arms. My time away has re-energised me for the challenges ahead and I look forward to serving once again in the club that I’ve built my foundation as both player and coach,” Dixon said.

Both Young and Dixon won league championships with the club as player and coach, respectively.
