Kenyan athletics ‘concerned’ over increased doping
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) — A senior Kenyan athletics official says the increasing number of doping cases in the country, famous for its world-class distance runners, is causing concern.
David Okeyo, secretary general of Athletics Kenya, says the Government has also “put a lot of money” into a commission to investigate after a German documentary made allegations before last year’s London Olympics of widespread doping in Kenya. A list released this month by the world athletics body reported 13 Kenyan athletes were sanctioned for doping offences between January 2012 and January 2013, a rate of more than one a month that appears to underline a widespread problem.
Okeyo says he doesn’t believe the allegations of systematic doping in the documentary, but he concedes authorities are “all concerned” with the rising number of proven cases.
