PHILADELPHIA, USA — Kingston College’s Clive Pullen pulled off a rare double, winning the triple jump, a year after he won the long jump, as Jamaican high school boys swept the jumps for the second straight year at the 119th Penn Relays Carnival, which ended yesterday at a sun-bathed Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

Wolmer’s Boys’ Christoffe Bryan successfully defended his high jump title, as Calabar High’s Sadiki Eddie pulled off an upset to win the long jump.

Bryan cleared 2.15m to win the high jump, but failed at 2.20m which would have equalled his personal best set last year at the Milo Western Relays.

The ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ Champs Class One record holder only cleared 2.12m on his third try before clearing 2.15m on his first try, but just failed to get over the final height.

His win was the third straight year that a Jamaican was winning the high jump after St George’s College’s Kimarki Absolam won his second title in 2011.

Bryan told the Jamaica Observer that he was elated with what has happened thus far. “I am satisfied with the effort today and the progress I have made so far.”

He said the objective was to surpass his personal best this year, but he was being patient that it would happen soon.

Ashani Wright of Jamaica College was third with 2.06m, while Ardenne’s Mathew Campbell was fourth with 2.03m.

Pullen, who won at Champs and at the Carifta Games, ended his high school career “on a high” after he became the first athlete to score 100 points at Champs.

His best jump yesterday was 15.20m and he said he was hoping it would have been a Kingston College victory in both horizontal jumps.

“I am just elated with the win here in the triple jump after winning the long jump last year,” he said before he thanked his coach Jeremy Delisser, whom he said has been with him since prep school.

Clayton Brown of Jamaica College was second with 14.92m, while his teammate Obrien Waysome was fourth with 14.85m.

Eddie, who was ranked fourth coming into the event, beat number one ranked Nicholas Phynn of Jamaica College on the count back after both jumpers recorded 7.28m.

The win extended Jamaica’s dominance in the event to a fourth straight year, as Jamaicans filled the top five positions yesterday.

Calabar’s Julanie Walker was third with 7.14m, his teammate Adrian Riley was fourth with 7.11m, and Gavin Gibson of Jamaica College was fifth with 7.10m.

Eddie said he struggled with the weather, which was cool at the start of the competition, noting that he had cramped up during training a few times here. “I felt a bit down as I did not think I was at my best and not sure I was ready,” he admitted.
