The ‘KC’ influence paying off at Mico
A few years ago, Raymond ‘KC’ Graham promised to transform Mico University College into an inter-collegiate sporting giant and based on this season’s performances, they just may have become the dominant university in the island.
Mico, located on Marescaux Road, just above the Wolmer’s Boys’ and Girls’ schools, is more known for its production of teachers, but since the appointment of Graham as director of sports in 2010, the university has developed a new sporting culture and on top of their game.
Recently, after defeating GC Foster for the rugby title, Mico College has now won five titles in four major sporting disciplines. GC Foster had previously dominated rugby and Graham said it was a remarkable feat “because GC Foster has never lost rugby before”.
Led by Premier League players Ricardo Oldham of Arnett Gardens and Portmore United’s Rosario Harriott, to name a few, Mico won the knockout football crown by beating the University of Technology (UTech).
The Mico ladies then turned back University of West Indies (UWI) to lift the senior netball title for the second year running.
Mico went further when their cricketers won both limited-over titles, beating UWI in the 50-over version and GC Foster in the T20 edition.
Mico missed out on a sixth title when their female footballers reached the final for the first time ever, but were beaten by GC Foster College.
“It is unbelievable what Mico has done this year. We don’t play badminton, basketball and some other sports, so when you look at the strike rate in victory, Mico has the best record,” Graham told the Jamaica Observer.
“No university has ever won two cricket titles in one year and what is even amazing — we lost eight players from last year,” noted Graham.
These players he mentioned, like fastbowler Jason Dawes and batsmen Shacoya Thomas, along with Nkrumah Bonner were lost to Jamaica and the West Indies High Performance Centre.
Since 2010, in an effort to rebuild the culture of the university, Mico has been recruiting heavily and has given a number student athletes scholarships while bringing in top-quality coaches.
Graham said Mico, with one of the smallest populations among the major universities and only one proper playing field which they have to share with all the sporting disciplines, nevertheless achieves results deemed to be unbelievable.
“Sometimes we have cricket balls hitting the athletes, hitting the rugby players,” he said with a chuckle.
“The recruiting is very important for the success and when I came to Mico three years ago, I got a mandate to bring Mico… but when I look at UTech and UWI, I know it was going to be a difficult job. But the support I got from the president Mr Packer (Claude) and the school board was amazing,” noted Graham, a past student of the institution.
