Grange cops major award at Penn Relays
PHILDELPHIA, USA — Holmwood Technica”s Gleneve Grange’s new meet record 54.29m in the high school girls discus throw on last Thursday’s first full day of competition at the 119th Penn Relays Carnival here in Philadelphia won her the High School Girls Athlete for Individual Events, it was later announced.
It was a national junior record and new personal best for Grange, who in linear measurements still used by the Americans, threw 178 feet one inch, breaking the previous record by more than 10 feet when she upset top-ranked Tara-Sue Barnett of Edwin Allen.
The old record of 167″ 4′ or 51.02m was set last year by former Edwin Allen thrower Daniel Thomas.
Grange, who won the silver medal in Class One at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Girls’ Champs about six weeks ago, had one big throw last Thursday to win the title, the first for Holmwood, and the fourth-in-a-row for Jamaican high school girls after Thomas last year, Sasha-Gay Marston of Edwin Allen in 2011, and Candicia Bernard of St Hugh’s in 2010.
Mannings School’s Kamesha Marshall had won Jamaica’s first high school discus title in 2000.
