‘Str8 Speed’ for Jamwest Sunday
SPEED junkies and drag racing enthusiasts will journey to Jamwest Speedway in Old Hope, Westmoreland, to kick-start another season of head-to-head entertainment this Sunday.
Set to start at 8:00 am, the event, dubbed Str8 Speed, will see blistering runs by fuel-pumped speedsters determined to be the fastest in their class.
Track manager and event organiser Windsor Young revealed some new treats in store for the meet.
“You can expect quite a show. We’re reviving the quarter-mile circuit and opening it up to the drag racers to bring the excitement back into drag racing. This would be a first for us, but we’re trying to have a Street Class Circuit Exhibition. So far, we’ve done tests and some of the street cars don’t seem to be able to handle the track, but we hope we can work something out there,” Young told Auto.
According to Young, spectators are in for a day of clashes between rivals old and new.
Among the drivers set to compete are Lyndon ‘Buju’ Bardowell, who will be stepping up from his usual 10-second class into the nine-second zone where he will do battle with Sydney Knott and his Chevy Camaro.
Damion ‘Damage’ Allen and his Mitsubishi Evolution will also be embarking on new territory, making their debut in the eight-second class. Set to square off in the 10-second class are Seymour Anderson, driving his B13 Nissan Attessa; Omar Evering, driving his Nissan Pulsar; Eugene Grandison, Honda Civic, and Kingsley Depass, driving his turbo-charged Toyota MR2.
Driving his 2000 model Toyota Corolla, dubbed ‘110 From Hell’, Andre ‘Pluggy’ Kerr is looking to join the 11-second class, while Yvon Chinloy will be gunning for the 12-second class in his Hyundai. Seeking to take home the first-place trophy for the 14-second class in his 2005 Mugen-fitted DC5 Integra Type R is Omar Mitchell.
