Defending champions Naggo Head surge to lead
DEFENDING champions Naggo Head, with a combined 19 points, have surged into the lead after three finals on day two of the four-day 2013 INSPORTS/Seprod Primary Schools Athletics Championships at the National Stadium yesterday.
Clan Carthy are in second position with 15 points, followed by St John’s 11, Grateful Hill 11, Harbour View 10, Morant Bay eight, Holy Family seven, Rousseau six, Jericho five, New Providence five, Greater Portmore five, Iris Gelly four, Maxfield Park two, St Patrick’s two and Spanish Town with one point.
Naggo Head also lead in the girls’ section with 16 points, followed by St John’s 10 and Grateful Hill nine, while Harbour View are the early leaders in the boys’ section with 10 points, Clan Carthy nine and Holy Family with seven points.
Only one record was broken on Wednesday’s opening day with Wayne Pinnock of Clan Carthy leaping 5.27 metres in the preliminary to erase the old mark of 5:26m set by Akeemo Minott in 2009 in the boys’ long jump open.
Pinnock returned yesterday in the final to win the event and in the process equalled his record. Craig Brown of Holy Family was second with 4.82m and third went to Romario Lodge of Harbour View with 4.92 metres.
Naggo Head finished one-two in the girls’ high jump open final yesterday, with Shauntia Davidson of Naggo Head winning with a leap of 1.40 metres ahead of her teammate Natsuya Chance who finished with an identical height of 1.40m, with third place going to Brittany Anderson of Clan Carthy with 1.35 metres.
Meanwhile, in the Class One boys’ 400 metres heats yesterday, Julian McRae of St Richard’s ran the fastest time of 59.42 seconds and will be in action in today’s semi-finals. The closest times to McRae were done by Ramon Williams of Iris Gelly with 1:00.26, Daniel Rhone of Southborough 1:00.26 and Eleon Wright of New Providence with 1:00.49.
The Class One girls’ 400 metres semi-finals will also be run today with Tionna Palmer of New Providence running 1:02.14 in the preliminaries, Rehana Christie of Portsmouth 1:02.48 and Tiffany Coley of Waterford with 1:04.23.
