MoBay mayor facing no-confidence motion
WESTERN BUREAU — Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillor for the Cambridge Division, Homer Davis, has served notice that he intends to move a no-confidence motion against Mayor of Montego Bay and Chairman of the St James Parish Council Glendon Harris, at the next sitting of the council.
The notice was served at last week’s regular monthly meeting of the council.
Davis did not give the meeting the reason for his planned no-confidence motion, but he later told the Jamaica Observer that several St James councillors, as well as members of the public were dissatisfied with what he described as Harris’ poor leadership of the local authority.
“We have nothing personal against the mayor, but we are very, very disappointed in the way in which the affairs of the council are being conducted,” Davis stressed.
“When we look at the way he handled the flag issue at last year’s swearing-in ceremony for St James councillors; his handling of the MoBay Night Out; the matter of the renaming of the Cornwall Regional Hospital; and the financial situation at the council, we believe that the mayor has really, really disappointed us.”
Harris, who is also the People’s National Party (PNP) councillor for the Maroon Town Division, told reporters that he was undaunted by Davis’ action.
“I know that I have the 100 per cent support of my (PNP) councillors. We are 13 (PNP) members strong and the minority (JLP) recognises very well that we are doing the best for the parish of St James,” said the mayor.
Since his ascendancy to the chair of the St James Parish Council just over a year ago, Harris, a councillor for almost 25 years, has been harshly criticised on several controversial matters that have occurred in the parish under his watch.
