Dwayne Smith fined 10 per cent of match fee

KOLKATA, India (CMC) — West Indies batsman Dwayne Smith has been fined 10 per cent of his match fee for breaching the Code of Conduct during the qualifier two match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Friday.

A brief statement released on the IPL website yesterday did not reveal the exact nature of the breach, which occurred while the opener was representing Mumbai Indians against Rajasthan Royals.

However, the incident relates to the 13th over of the Mumbai innings when Smith, while running between the wickets, collided with fast bowler James Faulkner.

The match referee found that it was deliberate on the part of the West Indies batsman.

Smith smashed 62 off 44 balls to lead Mumbai to a four-wicket win over Royals at Eden Gardens in the final playoff contest.

The IPL statement said Smith has admitted to the Level 1 offence (Article 2.1.8) of conduct contrary to the spirit of the game.

The match referee’s decision is final and binding for Level 1 breaches of the IPL Code of Conduct.

Mumbai Indians take on Chennai Super Kings as they contest yet another final of the IPL today.

Smith, who has seen the Mumbai Indians off to fliers in the last two matches with half centuries, is expected to play an important role again as the curtains come down on the IPL.
