Volvo brace for August Town challenge
WITH the Rivoli United/Wadadah match brought forward to last evening, Volvo FC and August Town will take the spotlight today in the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) All-Island Confederation Play-off at Drax Hall at 3:30 pm.
Wadadah and Rivoli United were scheduled to play today, but the game was suprisingly brought forward to facilitate a charity match involving French footballer Florent Malouda at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
With that in mind, last evening’s result wasn’t known up to press time hence the focus will be on the early leaders Volvo and August Town — both on four points.
But that points standing will be altered, and a Rivoli victory would have sent them to the top of the four-team group for at least 24 hours.
Last Wednesday, Volvo of St Ann stunned Wadadah of St James 2-0 and assume leadership of the group with four points, ahead of August Town on goal difference, and a win today against August Town will give them a stranglehold on the group.
Once again the David Pryce-coached outfit will be relying on two-goal hero Jamal Stoddart, Everton Marsh, Jermaine Wheldon, Christopher Green, and Roshane Henry for another victory.
But despite playing at home, Eastern Confederation champion Volvo might find it hard to penetrate an August Town team led by veterans Gerald Neil and Craig White, that have not conceded a goal in their two matches.
Buoyed by that fact, August Town — the Kingston champion following their 0-0 draw away to Rivoli on Wednesday — could snatch three valuable points on the road, putting coach Christopher Bender in the driver’s seat.
