Cops in Vanessa Kirkland murder case get bail
THE three police constables implicated in the March 2012 murder of 16-year-old schoolgirl Vanessa Kirkland were offered $500,000 bail each when they appeared in the Supreme Court on Monday.
The accused, Durvin Haye, Anna Kay Bailey and Andrewair Smith, who were all assigned to Mobile Reserve were arrested and charged in May with murder and wounding with intent following a recent ruling from the director of public prosecution.
The accused were offered bail by Justice Marjorie Cole-Smith following a bail application by their attorneys, on condition that they surrender their travel documents. A stop order was also put in place for the three.
Bailey was ordered to report to the Port Maria Police Station on Mondays and Saturdays, while the other two accused were ordered to report to the Greater Portmore Police Station on the same days as part of their bail condition.
They are scheduled to return to court on June 14.
The Immaculate Conception High School student was shot and killed on March 20 on Norman Lane, Kingston 13 about 9:00 pm while a birthday party was in progress
Six other people were reportedly shot and injured in the incident.
According to the police, the incident began in Portmore, St Catherine where the robbery of a cell phone occurred during which the victim (of the robbery) was allegedly assaulted.
The perpetrators allegedly sped off in a blue Suzuki Swift motor car, with residents and the police giving chase.
The incident was broadcasted over the police radio network and shortly after the car was allegedly spotted along Washington Boulevard, from where the police followed the vehicle, following which a gunfight started when the car reached Norman Lane.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the police vehicles came in the lane shortly after the car drove in and that shots were fired in the car before any of the occupants had a chance to get out.
Attorney Peter Champagnie is representing the two male accused, while attorney Oswest Senior Smith is representing Bailey.
