Howard Cooke win Western Primary Champs
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Howard Cooke Primary amassed 201 points to gain their first hold on the JPSCo Western Primary Schools Track and Field Championships at Saturday’s fifth staging of the one-day event at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
The St James school became the fourth winners of the event, beating two-time defending champions Wakefield Primary of Trelawny (181) by 20 points, with Corinaldi Avenue Primary in third with 174, Enfield of Westmoreland 163 and Barracks Road Primary with 151 points, rounding out the top five schools.
Howard Cooke scored heavily in the relays to move from third place at the end of the individual events as Enfield slipped from the top position to third.
Twelve records were broken on the day, including both girls’ cricket ball throws as Enfield swept the four sections placing first and second in three of the events.
Sherika Christie threw the ball 38.78m to win in Class Three, breaking the old mark of 33.50m set last year by Samakay Shanne Blake of Mount Hermon Primary, while Petersfield’s Kimarie Drummond, who was second on Saturday with 33.68m, also broke the old mark.
Francene Smith won the Class Four event with 25.69m, beating the two-year-old mark of 24.40m set by Green Pond’s Akela Mendez.
Ocho Rios Prep’s Akelia Hylton, who won the Class Two girls 100m, broke the record in the preliminaries, running 13.33 seconds, just inside the 13.34 seconds set in 2010 by Rosanna Samuels of Corinaldi Avenue Primary. Hylton then ran 13.74 seconds in the final.
Interestingly, in both the boys’ and girls’ Class Four 150m race five athletes went under the old mark in both events in the preliminaries.
Ocho Rios Prep’s Bronx Walters led the boys’ with 19.75 seconds in beating the 21.03 seconds set by Roy Miller of Mount Peto in 2011, while Aaliyah Foster of Corinaldi Avenue ran 20.73 seconds to lead the girls in breaking the old mark of 22.29 second set by Vanessa King of Mt Peto in 2011.
While Walters went on to win the boys’ Class Four 150m title, Foster finished outside the medals, in fourth place, as Howard Cooke’s Carletta Bernard won to take the double as she also set a new record in the 80m race with a time of 11.85 seconds to beat the 11.90 seconds set in 2009 by Wakefield’s Tanecia Clayton.
The other individual record that was broken went to Duncan’s Primary’s Antonio Watson who ran 1:04.21 to win the Class Two 400m, beating the 1:04.26 set by Barracks Road’s Jadeja Reynolds in 2010.
