Applause, applause!
Dear Editor,
I must applaud Minister of Youth and Culture Lisa Hanna for her straightforward contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Parliament last Tuesday. The truth is, she is only one of the few politicians that have been brave enough to tell us things as they really are, especially about matters that are generally not discussed.
I am particularly pleased with her boldness in calling on the Parliament to take a decision on the issue of abortion. The reality is that the issue has been debated for decades with no clear stance taken.
Abortion currently is a taboo topic in our country and, to be frank, the only reason it is forbidden is because the church has said so. It is high time we think practically and realistically rather that religiously.
Women should be given the right to chose whether or not to keep their pregnancy versus being forced to keep it because the church says so. What role will the church play in the life of that unwanted child when it is born? Will they ensure that it is properly fed, nurtured and cared for like all children rightfully should? Religion continues to muzzle our people and continues to sink them further into despair.
I don’t wish for religious views to be imposed on me. Currently abortion is illegal here in Jamaica, but this has not stopped hundreds of Jamaican women and young girls from having an abortion. We cannot be hypocrites on the matter. Ward Five at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital, which deals with matters relating to abortion, admits hundreds each year, many of whom have had their lives endangered and some have even lost their lives. This is a result of them not being able to have the procedure done in a safe and legal way.
Anyway, let us not overshadow a very good presentation by the minister. She has stepped up to the plate and delivered a well researched and thorough presentation. So much so that her usual critics have gone into hiding. Ms Hanna, we are confident that the care and protection of the nation’s children is at the top of your agenda. Continue implementing policies and measures that are geared towards the holistic development of the nation’s young minds.
