Bolt cruises – Asafa also wins 100m heat at National Senior Trials
DOUBLE World Record holder Usain Bolt allowed his talented legs to do all the talking yesterday as he cruised through the second round of the men’s 100m on the opening day of the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships at the National Stadium.
In front of a sparse crowd, Bolt, who ran in the first heat of the quarter-finals, ran hard for 50 metres before shutting down to clock 10.00 seconds, booking his place in today’s semi-finals ahead of Jacques Harvey and Jason Livermore who both clocked 10.07 seconds before leaving for the warm-up track, declining interviews.
The first round was held earlier in the day where seven fastest men from the morning’s first round joined the 25 ranked runners later on in the evening. The final will also be run this evening, set for 9:15 pm.
Former World record holder Asafa Powell also advanced to the semi-finals with a good-looking 10.02 seconds, while Kemar Bailey-Cole continued to impress, winning his heat in 10.04 seconds.
Nickel Ashmeade, who skipped the 100m last year to concentrate on the 200m, was second to Powell in 10.05 seconds.
The women’s 100m semifinals and final will be run today as well as the 400m hurdles and 1500m for both men and women.
The men’s triple jump, women’s discus throw and women’s long jump finals will also be held today.
Despite running 45.99 seconds, finishing third in his first round heat, defending men’s 400m champion, Dane Hyatt, said he is ready to retain his title.
After finishing behind Rushane McDonald (45.68 seconds) and Edino Steele (45.75), Hyatt who recently retained his NCAA Division Two title, told the Jamaica Observer: “I have no choice, I have to defend my title, this is the National Championships.”
Errol Nolan, who is a title favourite in some quarters, was second in his first round heat to Calabar schoolboy Javon Francis who ran 45.88 seconds while Akheem Gauntley, Javere Bell and Nicholas Maitland also won their respective heats to advance to Saturday’s semi-finals.
In yesterday’s morning session, Olympian Roxroy Cato and World Championships semi-finalist Ristananna Tracey led the qualifiers for today’s final of the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles event.
Cato, the top Jamaican so far this season, won his heat in 49.56 seconds and leads Annsert Whyte (49.83) and Isa Phillips (50.13).
Tracey, who has a season best 55.10 seconds, leads the women’s section with 55.70 seconds, finishing ahead of her older sister Nickesha who ran 56.08 second, while Nickesha Wilson also won her heat in 56.08 seconds.
