Pedestrians, please!
KENUTE Hare, director of the Road Safety Unit (RSU) in the Ministry of the Transport and Works, is urging pedestrians to be extra careful when using the island’s roadways.
Of the 131 persons killed on our roads since the start of the year, 35 per cent were pedestrians.
“This is a serious concern. We’re urging them to keep on the sidewalks, be mindful of oncoming traffic, and wear light clothing in the nights,” he said.
Last year at this time, a total of 120 persons lost their lives on the roads. Thirty-five per cent of that number were pedestrians.
“We’re still poised to keep the fatalities below the 300 mark. The new 240 seems difficult, but can be achieved with the active participation of all road users,” he said.
In 2012, a total of 260 people lost their lives using the public thoroughfares. That was the first time since 1999 that the number of fatalities fell below 300.
