Man on manslaughter rap remanded for psychiatric treatment
A man implicated in the death of an 18-year-old student was remanded into custody on Tuesday for further psychiatric treatment.
Forty-three-year-old Vernon Reid was reportedly driving a coaster bus that ploughed into a bus stop on Half-Way-Tree Road last October, killing Institute of Academic Excellence student Melissa Thompson.
Six pedestrians were also injured after the bus veered off the road and onto the sidewalk while trying to avoid a collision with another vehicle.
Reid was taken into custody and charged with manslaughter, failure to report an accident, operating a vehicle without a driver’s licence, and operating a vehicle without insurance coverage.
On Tuesday, when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court, he was remanded for treatment until November 21.
However, he complained that he was allergic to the injection that he was getting, claiming that it caused his nose to bleed.
“Me cyaan tek it. Mi allergic to it from mi born. Mi wi tek de tablet,” he said, while insisting that the magistrate make a note of it on his file.
He was then assured by the magistrate that she would ensure that the doctor is informed before he was remanded into custody.
