First Regional increases scholarships by 71 per cent
OCHO RIOS, St Ann — First Regional Co-operative Credit Union has awarded scholarships, bursaries and book grants totalling $3 million to 17 students, comprising Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) achievers and tertiary students, for the new school year.
The 2013 scholarship allocation represents a 71 per cent increase over the amount earmarked last year to support the credit union’s education programme. The number of tertiary level bursaries also increased from four to five.
At the GSAT level, five students were awarded scholarships valued at $30,000 annually for the first five years of their high school education. At the tertiary level, five undergraduate students have each received a bursary valued at $200,000. This will allow them to pursue studies in veterinary medicine, science, medicine, and computer studies at universities across the island. Seven students received book grants.
This year’s scholarship recipients will join other First Regional GSAT students who are already at varying stages of their five-year high school programme.
Addressing a recent ceremony where the prizes were presented, board member Rev Dr Glenroy Lalor said the credit union’s decision to increase its education funding reflects its widened focus beyond St Mary and St Ann, to embrace tourism workers and their children islandwide.
Rev Dr Garnett Roper, guest speaker at the awards ceremony, challenged the students to identify their goals and to remain focused until they are accomplished.
First Regional has provided educational opportunities for the past 13 years as part of its commitment to giving back to the community in which it operates and conducts business.
