Puerto Rico defeat Jamaica 88-82 in FIBA Champs
CARACAS, Venezuela — Jamaica put in a fighting display against Group A favourites Puerto Rico at the Poliedro de Caracas on Monday, but an 82-88 defeat puts them on the brink of elimination from the FIBA Americas Championship.
Forward Samardo Samuels, who was at the heart of Jamaica’s impressive third quarter comeback, led the scoring with 24 points.
Former Dallas Mavericks point guard Jose Barea also had 24 for Puerto Rico. ?
The Jamaicans, who have now lost three on the trot, will end the preliminary round against Brazil tomorrow. ?Four teams in each of the two groups will advance to the second round, which commences on September 5. ?
Depending on Jamaica’s fortunes tomorrow and the results in other games, the Sam Vincent-coached team could still progress.
The semi-finalists at this Championship all qualify for the basketball World Cup next year in Spain.
