JLP says Deputy Gen Secs back to full duties
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Secretariat said Sunday that the party’s four deputy general secretaries, who were said to be suspended following claims that they were actively campaigning in the leadership contest, are free to continue their duties.
Following the claims, attributed to supporters of Audley Shaw, who is rivalling party leader Andrew Holness for the leadership of the party, Dr Andrew Wheatley, Dr St Aubyn Bartlett, Audley Gordon and Homer Davis were relieved of duties associated with the election process.
But, JLP general secretary, Dr Horace Chang, said in a statement Sunday night that following deliberations at the level of the party’s Central Executive, all four are free to continue their full duties as deputy general secretaries.
“The four Deputy General Secretaries function as they are constitutionally mandated to and the advice from the JLP Electoral Commission does not preclude them from their elected duties,” Dr Chang stated.
He also indicated that no authority outside of the Central Executive can remove the Deputy General Secretaries from their elected positions, unless they choose to resign or are found to have breached the Party’s rules and constitution.
“There has been no breach of any rules by the Deputy General Secretaries and as such they remain in good standing,” he said.
