Schools jockey for D’Cup inter-zone berths
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A number of schools have started lining themselves up for a run at the Interzone places in the ISSA/LIME daCosta cup schoolboy football competition as well as the Ben Francis KO places that are reserved for zone winners as the first round draws to a close.
While a few rescheduled games are still to be played, the first round comes to an end tomorrow and will see a number of mouth-watering games, including Manning’s School hosting the dangerous Grange Hill in Sav la Mar in a Zone D. With the exception of Zone H where Clarendon College have already established an eight-point lead after just four games and appear to be running away from the rest of the field, the other 14 zones will see competition for the two inter-zone spots.
Up to Saturday afternoon’s round of matches, six schools still sported perfect win records. Zone E giants St Elizabeth Technical and Munro College drew 1- 1 and former champions Rusea’s High and Frome Technical were goal less as the latter dropped their first points of the campaign.
In addition to Clarendon College’s four straight wins, St James High in Zone A and Grange Hill in Zone D have won their first three games as well as Marcus Garvey Technical in Zone I where Cedric Titus have won two in a row.
Port Antonio High have won both game splayed in Zone L, while Bustamante High won their opening game on Saturday with an upset 4-1 beating of Denbigh High who contributed two own goals to the tally.
Bustamante High were not the only school to score a historic win on Saturday as Thompson Town were also creating their own history with a firstever win over perennial contenders Edwin Allen High in Zone H to be tied in second place with Lennon High on four points each.
While several schools are still battling for a place in the next round and to extend their season, others are still seeking their first win with six schools yet to score a point of the 14 that have not won a single game.
Eight schools, including former champion Garvey Maceo, have yet to score a goal. St Elizabeth Technical are still the leaders in goals scored with 25 for and one against, followed by Munro College with 15 scored and one against; Marcus Garvey Technical have scored 12 times, while Frome Technical, Manchester High and Brimmervale High have scored 10 goals.
