World Cup Trophy Facts

The FIFA World Cup was cancelled between 1938 and 1949 before resuming in 1950. The world cup missed two successive tournaments as both the 1942 and 1946 competitions were cancelled due to the events of the Second World War. The 1950 staging proved very challenging as it was the post-war era and former nations had been absorbed by bigger states, therefore the 1950 World Cup saw only 13 teams participating.

This launched FIFA into revamping the tournament and by 1982 the competition expanded to include 24 teams. Then by France 1998 the tournament boasted 32 teams which saw the first appearance of our Reggae Boyz in the tournament, competing in a group with Japan, Croatia and Argentina. Jamaicans have always loved the competition and now with the Coca-Cola FWCTT on Sunday, October 6, the trophy will be on offer for viewing and photographs up close.
