GRANGE HILL, Westmore-land — High-riding Grange Hill High school and former champions St James High crashed to losses yesterday, tasting defeat for the first time in the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football season as the first round of games ended.

Mannings School handed Zone D leaders Grange Hill their largest margin of defeat in years, winning 4-0 at the Belle Isle Sports Complex, while unfancied Green Pond overcame St James High 2-1 in Zone A.

Former National Under-17 player Melvin Blair scored twice for Mannings as they romped to what was an unexpected easy win against a Grange Hill team that was without some key players.

Mannings went ahead in the first minute of play through Tevin Daley and were up 3-0 at half-time.

Grange Hill are still ahead with nine points, despite the loss, but Godfrey Stewart’s 5-1 hammering of Knockalva Technical moved them into joint second place with Mannings on seven points each.

Michael Kerr scored three times for Godfrey Stewart, while Romario Graham and Romario Levy were also on the scoresheet.

At Green Pond, Peter Campbell scored both goals for the home team in their big upset over the Zone A leaders who are now stuck on nine points with Cornwall College, who they meet on Saturday.

After being held goalless by Zone B leaders Frome Technical on Saturday, 10-time champions Rusea’s High shrugged off a determined Cambridge High to run out 3-1 winners.

Tavon Barnes scored twice for Rusea’s and Lexon Samuels added the third after Jerome Thompson had levelled the scores at 1-1 at half time.

Green Island stayed in touch with the leaders, blanking Irwin High 3-0 to be on seven points in third place, one behind Rusea’s, while Frome lead with 10 points at the halfway stage.

William Knibb took over the lead in Zone C after a 2-0 win over neighbours Holland High, ahead of Herbert Morrison on goal difference, both on seven points.

Spot Valley High took over third place from Muschett High after beating them 3-0 for their first win of the campaign in their fourth game. Both are on six points.
